She sparkles: Ashley Herzberg of Amista Vineyards
Winemaker Ashley Herzberg was supposed to go to medical school after completing her degree in chemical engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. Lucky for us, she decided to work at a winery lab during harvest in Sonoma County and she fell in love with the wine industry. Today, Herzberg makes amazing sparkling wines, using unique varietals like Grenache Blanc and Syrah, at Healdsburg’s Amista Vineyards.

So what sets Bacigalupi apart from the hundreds of competitors in Sonoma County? John has nurtured the Bacigalupi estate vineyards for as long as anyone can remember. He now collaborates with winemaker Ashley Herzberg, who crafted their initial vintage 2011 Chardonnay and all subsequent wines.Nicole and Katey believe it’s Ashley’s ability to coax the natural expression of the fruit from the vineyard, which she does by letting the vineyards speak for themselves with minimal interference, and in using native yeasts.

The working mother is a busy human being, especially the grape-stained winemaking mother during harvest season. It might sound glamorous, but very few of us can really conceive of the brutal physical demands of winemaking—let alone the logistical challenges of childcare during harvest—a 24/7 workload in wine country.
